The small anthology Like music, in the night... - French farewell poems carries a somewhat reassuring title for obvious commercial reasons instead of the one it bore when it was gradually published from 1993 to 2003: it was then called Small French anthology of death.
The title of the anthology borrows the first hemistich from the last line of the Kavafis poem Voices. The selection of poems was based solely on the subjective reflection of a specific atmosphere, which is why this collection retains only that aspiration - and no other, especially of a literary or historical order.
The poets featured, with one exception, lived from the 15th to the 19th century. In the last pages of the book, the reader can seek brief biographies of them. In the Appendix, only four song-poems of the legendary chansonnier Georges Brassens (1921-1981) creep in, with whom I have previously dealt systematically.
