The great theologian, philosopher, philologist, and translator Friedrich Schleiermacher (1768-1834) dedicated a series of university lectures and talks to issues of hermeneutics, philological criticism, and translation studies.
These lectures and talks, although not finalized and published by him, had a significant impact on philosophical thought regarding these issues.
Regarding hermeneutics, Schleiermacher is the first to raise the universal question concerning understanding and its prerequisites. He thus formulates a universal and systematic hermeneutics that completely transcends the limited framework of specialized and somewhat unsystematic interpretative practices in philology, theology, law, etc.
As for the issue of translation, he is the first to bring it out of obscurity and subject it to systematic treatment, distinguishing and evaluating the two main translation methods according to him.
Lastly, regarding the issue of philological criticism, he attempts an equally general and systematic analysis of its fundamental problems and methods. The texts of this edition (the lecture on translation and the introductions to hermeneutics and criticism from the university lectures) provide the reader access to Schleiermacher's thought concerning these issues, the significance of which is by no means limited to philosophy alone.
The original analyses of the philosopher, which were crucial for the development of a hermeneutic philosophy in the 20th century, remain fertile and relevant today.
