My first engagement with the influences that Elytis received from Kalvos's poetry began with my study "The Multiform Harmony of Elytis' Orientations According to Kalvos" (1993). As I noted back then, Elytis, in his study of Kalvos's poetry, insists mainly on those particular elements that shape his poetic work, which are fundamentally located in the meter and the rhythmic stride of the verse, the role of the adjective, the rhetorical apparatus of the discourse, his imagistic imagination, and his linguistic idiosyncrasy.

Subsequent studies that I conducted were also identified in the "Orientations" and concerned the functional role of the adjective (1994) and his linguistic idiosyncrasy (1997). However, over time, the idea matured within me to extend my research to the later collections up to Axion Esti. This current study has certainly differentiated and enriched itself significantly in relation to my previous studies.

My primary concern, however, has always been to base my conclusions on Elytis's poetry and to support them with quotations either from critical texts by himself or others who have engaged with his work. Although my main goal has been the influences he received from Kalvos's poetry and not the evaluation of his poetry, this has often become necessary, since a basic line of my work is that the poet does not copy or slavishly imitate his model but creatively utilizes and transforms it.
