Description

Description

The title of the collection of essays on the dramatic work of Panagiotis Soutsos refers to the well-known sarcastic response of Konstantinos Asopios, “The Soutsia, or Mr. Panagiotis Soutsos examined in grammar, in philology, in school principals, in metrics, and in poets,” where the author makes a naive and grandiose attempt to present himself as the Korais of archaizing.

This essay was the cause of a storm of reactions and disputes; it constitutes a turning point in the developments surrounding the linguistic issue. However, the intertextual reference of this volume's title is not satirical, but clearly points to the specific moment when the dramatic work of Pan. Soutsos was completed.

All five of these dramatic works represent the most extreme manifestation of Romanticism in Greek dramaturgy in the first half of the 19th century. Panagiotis Soutsos is the main exponent of pure Romanticism among the playwrights of Neo-Hellenic theater during the period 1830-1850.

Greek romantic dramaturgy has been misunderstood by critics and scholars almost to this day, while the studies in this volume seek to restore the recognition of Greek romantic writing in dramaturgy.
