This edition was published on the occasion of the eponymous exhibition organized by the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank at the exhibition space of the Eynard Mansion (March 29 – May 13, 2017).
As N. P. Paisios states in his introductory text: “After the death of Nikos Nikolaou, his third wife Angela, née Zoumboulaki, lovingly collected the works that were at the famous house of the painter in Aegina (not only to preserve them but also to help their further dissemination), and entrusted Olga Menzafou with their initial classification. The majority of these works constitute a corpus of approximately 5,000(!) drawings, where the researcher can reconstruct the entire course of Nikolaou, from the first hesitant sketches to the mature articulated discourse.”
The publication includes the sections "Youth Period," "Forms," "Places and Landscapes," "Theater," "Advertisements," "Studies for the 1957 Calendar of AGET," "The Woman of Zakynthos," and "Panteios and Other Murals." In this way, the multifaceted artistic activity of Nikolaou is fully covered.
The drawings have been made with various techniques, such as ink, charcoal, pencil, watercolor, tempera, oil, gouache, mainly on paper or cardboard, but also on canvas or tarpaulin. The artist himself wrote: “My line is drawn from nature, but I feel it is like a straight sheet that you bend as much as it can bend to give you the curvature you want. However, when you leave it free again, in its original state, it will become straight again. The drawing is therefore straight lines that you bend as far as they can bend without losing their origin.”
The appendix includes texts by the artist, Alexandros G. Xidis, and Ilias Ziogas. The publication is completed with a chronology, documentation of the works, and bibliography.
