In the developed world, extreme acts of violence and unimaginable, until just a few years ago, mass terrorist attacks have recently emerged, spreading insecurity and uncertainty among citizens and tragically highlighting serious issues regarding the functioning of democratic societies.

Western societies must now combine the preservation of their democratic achievements with ensuring their readiness to confront this unprecedented threat to their security.

The book addresses a neglected issue, that of the response to Islam, particularly fundamentalist Islam, by the European political elite. It has a dual purpose and role: on one hand, to describe in a scientific and comprehensible manner what the threat of fundamentalist Islam consists of today, and on the other, to provide a comprehensive political response to how the European political class should address this threat.
