This comedy is believed to be the most significant from a literary standpoint and the least vulgar compared to the others that have survived. Aristophanes himself even claims that the comedy "Clouds" is his best work up to the comedy "Frogs" (v.1047), but it is questionable whether it is the best of all his surviving comedies.
While the tradition of this genre of drama had a tendency towards coarse humor and indecency, the poet attempted to refine it and offer the audience something of higher quality, to which they were not accustomed. (. . .)
With much effort and continuous struggle, the poet managed to impose his style, change the tastes of the Athenian audience, and win first prize with "Frogs" in 450 BC.
