In ministering to my mourning brothers in the sacred space of the First Cemetery of Athens, I deemed it appropriate to engage in documenting the historical details concerning its establishment and to provide the reader with detailed information about the Sacred Churches within it and the funerary monuments that adorn this sacred place of silence.
Thus, in the first part, historical documents dating back to the reign of Otto, maps from that era, circulars from the Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, and references related to its creation and expansion to its current form by the respective municipal authorities are presented, among others.
In the second part, the Sacred Churches that exist in the Cemetery are presented, the history of the construction of the Church of the Holy Theodoros, its architecture, its painting and sculpture decoration, and brief references to the Church of Saint Lazarus and the Church of Saint Charles of the Roman Catholics.
In the third part, the types of funerary monuments and the great creators-artists whose works are distinguished for their unparalleled beauty are mentioned.
Finally, in the fourth and last part, there is a photographic appendix with notable monuments primarily found in the older sections of the Cemetery.
