The 20th volume (sirocco-stop) is the first to be published after the death of the inspiring, founding, and creator Emm. Kriaras. It follows in the footsteps of the monumental work conceived by its creator, who managed to compile the first 14 volumes, 1969-1997 (a-appendix).
The "Dictionary of Medieval Greek Demotic Literature 1100-1669 ("Kriaras Dictionary")" serves as a bridge between ancient and modern Greek. Awarded with dozens of commendatory reviews in Greek and international scientific journals and with significant distinctions, it has been, for decades, a key tool for the study of both our medieval literature and the modern Greek language internationally.
The Dictionary primarily meets the needs of researchers of Byzantine demotic texts. Equally decisively, however, it promotes the study of Modern Greek dialects and idioms, addressing the lack of a comprehensive historical dictionary of the Greek language. Across the twenty volumes of the work, both language and culture are documented simultaneously.
First, the medieval language is revealed in its deep stratification, which consists of words: (a) demotic from the period from the 12th to the 17th century (many of which have survived, semantically unchanged, in the modern Greek language, e.g., "prochthesinos"); (b) loanwords primarily from Italian, older French, and Turkish (e.g., "proza"); (c) Byzantine ones of the time (demotic or archaizing, e.g., "prokatoros"); (d) Hellenistic words, which survive into the medieval years, with or without alterations (e.g., "proodevo"); and (e) Ancient Greek words that survive, either unchanged or necessarily altered in type, meaning, or usage, in the medieval years (e.g., "polarion," "polo").
Then, the wealth of the cultural elements of the time is highlighted, as terms referring to offices (e.g., "proestos") or physiology (e.g., "prosmichis") are recorded; also, ecclesiastical terms (e.g., "prosforon"), medical (e.g., "proforitikos"), nautical (e.g., "prymna"), legal (e.g., "protesto"), economic (e.g., "prosodion"), military (e.g., "prosfigos"), and pharmaceutical (e.g., "prozoula").
