The translation by I. Fotiadis is framed by Prolegomena (pp. 11-19) and Notes (pp. 45-47). Fotiadis speaks of the timeless value of the Homeric epics (you think they were written today and there is no cultured person in the world who does not study them, admire them, and appreciate them) as well as the causes of the Trojan War and the plot of the Iliad.

The language of I. Fotiadis's text (the introductory notes and the translation of the Iliad) is the Pontic dialect of Chaldia. The phonetics and morphology are entirely characteristic of this dialect, and only in the vocabulary is the author sometimes forced to borrow from the vocabulary of Common Modern Greek (sessions, scepters, the parodic poetry, the patriarchal feudal regime, etc.).

As for the translation itself, although it seems strange in the first fifteen-syllable verses –the Iliad in Pontic!– afterwards the Pontic verse flows smoothly, without poetic mishaps. In very few cases –which are anyway expected in a poetic text– one can point out some gaps, mainly due to metrical reasons...
