Description

Description

It contains the dramatized and prose text, texts for the performance and for the text itself, a timeline of Kafka and the performances of his works in Greece, etc.

The Condemned Man is lying on the BED. The entire surface of the BED is covered with a layer of cotton. We lay the Condemned Man, naked of course, face down on the cotton; with these straps, we keep him bound by the hands, the feet, and the neck. Here, at the top of the BED, the man rests his head. At this point, there is a small felt plug, which is easily adjusted to fit immediately into his mouth. Its purpose is to prevent the man from shouting or biting his tongue. The Condemned Man has no choice but to put the felt in his mouth, otherwise, the strap on his neck will snap his neck!

Kafka's "In the Penal Colony" (written in 1919) one might say illustrates phenomena that marked the historical memory of the 20th century, such as the gulags, Auschwitz, Guantanamo, white cells, deserted islands, etc., long before they were presented. In a sense, therefore, the political significance of the work as a denunciation of the phenomenon of "totalitarianism" becomes clear from the very first moment. Without disregarding the importance of this political approach, it is interesting to ponder what else lies beyond, post-political, carrying the echo or the Memory of it.

The dramatized form of Franz Kafka's short story, "In the Penal Colony," was presented for the first time in Greece by the theatre group Point Zero at the Space of Historical Memory (Koraï 4) on February 5, 2009.
