Description

I "met" Papakyriakopoulos as a mathematician in 1965 when, by sheer chance, his doctoral thesis, published in 1943, came into my hands. In the following years, I had the rare fortune of hearing stories about his life and work from people who knew him: From the late Mathematics professors Nikolaos Kritikos, Dimitrios Kappos, Spyros Kanellos, and from the late Ioannis Kandylis, a chemist, and Iasonas Papakostopoulos, a civil engineer.

For the first time, I engaged in writing about the "resident of Fine Hall at Princeton" in November 1980 when I published a small article on his work in the monthly newspaper "O Tachydromos tis Paideias." When I later realized that Papakyriakopoulos was almost unknown in his own place, I decided to write a book about the life and work of this great scientist, who was also a significant benefactor. This decision was delayed for many years because I had other books to write, including the book "The Life and Work of Konstantinos Karatheodoris," which required considerable time to complete.

However, this does not mean that I did not gather relevant information about Christos Papakyriakopoulos from stories, letters, bibliographies, and articles. The present book is divided into 4 chapters, which contain a total of 13 sections. The first 6 relate to the milestones of his life. The subsequent sections discuss his work in mathematics, the honors he received, and the various events held in his memory.

For the writing of this book, the help of mathematician-author Mr. Apostolos Doxiadis and Ms. Aikaterini Papakyriakopoulou-Papageorgiou, niece of Christos, was invaluable, for which I sincerely thank them.
