Description

Description

The majority of ancient Greek theme collections available today are characterized by their exclusively utilitarian nature and their tutorial logic. The primary motivation for writing is, most of the time, to provide the minimally necessary tools for secondary education students to adequately meet the demands of the respective examination systems.

In contrast, Nikolaos Tziouganatos' "Theme Collection," a product of deep knowledge of the ancient Greek language, beyond its recognized practical value, is imbued with respect for the texts, linguistic sensitivity, and an idealistic goal to introduce its users to the secrets of a complex and colorful language, rather than merely helping them to carry out a mechanical process.

This work is part of a comprehensive program for approaching the ancient Greek language and harmoniously combines with the "Syntax" by the same philologist, which will soon be published, translated, by the "Estia" publishing house. Among the virtues of this book are the excellent selection of texts - which have been ruthlessly plagiarized by later imitators - their inclusion in their historical contexts, the thorough presentation of complex forms of discourse (participles and their analysis in the corresponding subordinate clauses, hypothetical statements, especially dependent in indirect speech, the method of introducing and conveying statements, etc.), etymological comments, and grammatical observations.

This edition offers newer generations this treasure in the most accessible form possible, thanks to the translation carried out by the skilled philologist Ilias Tsirigakis.
