Description

Description

This edition constitutes the final chapter of the collaboration between the Holy Monastery of St. Catherine and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which began approximately six years ago with the unprecedented loan of some of the most significant icons of the Monastery for our exhibition "The Glory of Byzantium (843 - 1261)" in 1997.

This collaboration continued until 2004 with the generous loan of forty icons for the subsequent exhibition "Byzantium: Faith and Power (1261 - 1557)," which will demonstrate the remarkable role of the Monastery during the last centuries of the Byzantine world.

In the intervening years, the Metropolitan Museum of Art had the honor of acting as a consultant for the Monastery in the design and installation of a new permanent exhibition in its treasury, within the ancient walls, where the most marvelous works of art from the Monastery are safely displayed for the enjoyment of many visitors from around the world.
