The Zanneio Experimental Gymnasium-Lyceum is a historic school associated with the post-war history of Piraeus. In the thirty years of existence (1956-1986) covered by the archival research of this book, the history of the school reveals and refracts the educational history of the Greek state.
The Zanneio was called upon to be the flagship of a modern and innovative national policy that would connect education with the real needs of the place for productive reconstruction. Its establishment set the tone not only for the era that created it but also demonstrated through its example the way towards modernization and economic recovery.
For this reason, its operation was closely monitored in the early years and funded. The educational reforms of 1959, 1964, 1976, 1982, and 1985 left their marks on it. But time itself also etched its indelible marks on the people who identified with the space, serving their own vision for education.
What meaning can such a re-examination have today? What is the benefit of this search? In times of crises, societies tend to reflexively turn to the past. Today, the identity crisis of an entire society is reflected everywhere—obviously in educational spaces and, of course, in schools, which experience the consequences of mistakes, omissions, a lack of vision, local politics, and sometimes ignorance.
However, if history is, as has been said, a "legacy of potentiality," then its valid scientific discourse is the only way forward in the right direction. The Zanneio, as a prism of history, is suitable for such a "reading." Let us see and reflect through its example what went wrong in the past, for what reasons we failed, what we could have done differently, and what needs to be corrected or reattempted.
And with this experience, let us try again today to find some of our lost visions, to reestablish the goals that were not realized at that time but were in the right direction, wiser, more united, and more sensitive. Perhaps this way we will succeed today in what we failed yesterday.
