In this book, I tried to bring the reader into meaningful contact with a long tradition of dialogue and commitment, in a way that is worth the effort, and with the hope that this contact will continue even after the end of reading it.

Ancient philosophy is sometimes taught as a succession of Great Thinkers, whose ideas the student must learn and admire. Nothing is further from the spirit of it. When we browse through works of ancient philosophy, most of the time we discover that what unfolds is a debate and argumentation in which we are called to participate."

Annas avoids the usual chronological overview, choosing to familiarize the reader with the basic problems and concerns of the ancient thinkers; at the same time, she draws our attention to the way we approach them and to the influence of factors that make our interest in the ancients selective and variable, reminding us of how different the readings of ancient works can be over time, depending on the interests and conditions of each era.
