The economy has become the grammar of politics. Its rules and commonplaces are repeated again and again in public discourse. But economics is not an "exact science": economic grammar is a form of mythology, a belief in collective representations that sometimes hold true and sometimes do not.
Economic myths poison public dialogue and the democratic spirit: this is supported by the economist Éloi Laurent, deconstructing three major myths - neoliberalism, xenophobia (presented as "national preference"), and skepticism about climate change.
Is it true that a dynamic market economy is due to free and fair competition? Is it true that wealth must be created and then redistributed? Is there really a "demographic replacement" occurring in which Europeans are declining in population? How much does immigration really cost? How will we address the environmental crisis? Are ecologists truly enemies of innovation and development?
"The power of economic myths lies in their contradictions: what they reveal, they also hide. And by consuming our entire mindset, they prevent us from seeing what is actually at stake each time, for which we should be fighting and worrying. Our economic myths are political mythologizations. Laurent does not claim to restore reason over myth. There is no truth in economics. What he aims to do is precisely to restore to the reader the desire for critical reflection, the progressive disappearance of which seriously harms the health of our democratic dialogue." - Le Monde
