The two collections of a total of twenty odes by Andreas Calvos included here, "The Lyre," Geneva 1824 and "Lyrical," Paris 1926, with ten each, along with his "Note" on his metric system, comprise all of his work in Greek. In this sense, the "Complete Works" in the title of the cover only refers to his Greek oeuvre.
Yet, these twenty odes were sufficient to establish him as one of our two national poets, who dedicated "all the strings of his lyre to the homeland" (K. Palamas), "the equal of Pindar" and "banquet of the gods" (A. Sikelianos).
This reprint of the 1956 edition by EFE, on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the poet's death (1869), includes, as it did then, the significant treatise by the late professor of the Universities of Athens and Berlin and academic Nikos Veis, "Introductions to Andreas Calvos."
