If you want to be safe while driving in winter conditions, anti-slip snow socks are important for improving the traction of your car’s wheels. These relatively new driving accessories are easier to install compared with snow chains and are an important part of your winter driving equipment. After all, according to the relevant decision of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the use of anti-slip devices is mandatory for all vehicles when traffic restrictions are imposed due to adverse weather conditions.

So what exactly are snow socks and how can you use them? Here is everything you need to know.

What are snow socks?

Before deciding to buy a set of snow socks, you need to know what they are, how they work, and when you should use them. In addition, if you would like to make sure what the differences are compared to common snow chains, this Buying Guide for Snow Chains will help you choose.

Driving with snow socks is similar to driving with snow chains. It is a system that is placed over your tires to increase traction on snowy and icy roads.

However, snow socks are made from a durable textile with an elastic top instead of metal chains. The main material used in the construction of snow socks is polyester fiber. This polyester material is highly absorbent and absorbs moisture from the road, while at the same time increasing traction due to its structure.

Snow socks generally cover the entire tread of the wheel, and most of the time they even cover the entire front part of the wheel, preventing snow from getting into the rim in this way.

In addition, snow socks are also compatible with vehicles equipped with anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and electronic stability programs (ESP).

How will you install them?

Let's get started!

  1. Park your car on a flat surface if possible and engage the handbrake.
  2. Next, pull one elastic edge of the snow cover over the width of your tire as shown in the image in step 1.
  3. Then, after placing them on the top part of both of your tires, move your car forward or backward a few meters (~1 meter) so that the rest of the tire is revealed, in order to complete the installation.

It's that simple! Easy and quick!

In the video below, you can watch the entire process described above, so you can better understand the steps.

How to Drive with Snow Socks?

Once you have successfully placed the snow socks on your tires, you should reduce your driving speeds to 20 to 30 km/h. Also, avoid rapid acceleration or sudden braking.

Safety Instructions

  • Use snow socks only on snow-covered roads. Using them on road surfaces that are not covered with snow will lead to rapid wear and negatively affect the car's behavior.
  • Use only the correct size of snow sock that should match your car's tires.
  • If possible, always park on flat surfaces both when installing and removing them.
  • Always follow the installation and usage instructions.
  • Always make smooth turns and avoid skidding.
  • In case of unusual noise, stop your car and check their condition.
  • Remove the snow socks immediately when they are no longer needed.

Maintenance Instructions

  • After use, check the condition of the fabric and seams. In case of damage, the snow socks should be replaced.
  • Before storing them in their bag, it is recommended to dry them and at the end of each season, wash them thoroughly with cold water.
