Before we start listing the steps, it’s worth mentioning that the correct helmet size is essential both for your safety and for comfort while riding. Carefully follow the steps below to make sure that the helmet you choose will fit your head perfectly.

Step 1 | Head Measurement

You’ve probably wondered how to correctly measure the circumference of your head, and that’s exactly why we’re here! 

Let’s start with the basics: 

1. Find a measuring tape (like the ones tailors use)
2. Wrap it around your head at the widest point. This is about 2.5 centimeters above your eyebrows (roughly the middle of your forehead) and goes horizontally over your ears.

Exactly where the tape meets, note the number in centimeters. This number is your basis for choosing the right helmet.

Step 2 | Learn Your Head Shape

Besides the centimeters, the shape also matters! Our heads are usually divided into three categories: 

• round (Round Oval)
• intermediate (Intermediate Oval)
• long (Long Oval)

Most companies design their helmets based on the intermediate shape. However, if you know you have a rounder or longer head, check the helmet’s features for its form, so it doesn’t put pressure on specific areas.

Step 3 | Choosing a Helmet and Size Chart

Now that you know your measurements and are ready to find the helmet you like, you should consult the size chart!

On the product page on Skroutz, right above the sizes, you can click on the “Size Guide”. For example, if you have chosen a Shoei helmet and your head circumference is 58 centimeters, according to the company's chart, your corresponding size is Medium (M).

How will you know it fits as soon as you receive it?

Let’s also look at some very useful tips you should know when trying on the helmet at home:

• The right pressure: A new helmet should fit tightly. You should feel even pressure around your head and it should press your cheeks slightly.
• The shake test: Put on the helmet, fasten the strap, and shake your head side to side and up and down. The helmet should not slip or move. If it turns easily, it’s too big for you!
• Watch out for pain: Pressure on the cheeks is normal, but you should not feel any pain or intense pressure on your forehead or the back of your neck. If you feel pain in these areas, then the size or shape is wrong.
• Don’t rush: Remember that the inner lining (the pads) in helmets needs about 15-20 hours of use to “settle” and take the exact shape of your head. Over time, it will loosen by about half a size!

Keep in mind: Sizes vary from brand to brand, and even between models of the same brand! For example, AGV K5 S helmets may have a slightly different fit and shape compared to AGV K6 S helmets. Always check the Size Chart for the specific model!
