The best books for the Halloween season!
Creepy & atmospheric edition!
Every October 31st, if you didn't know, we have Halloween. In Greece, of course, not so much, but we do what we can.
In this celebration, supposedly you can come in contact with the world of spirits, while anything related to magic and the supernatural is a must!
So, I gathered my favorite books with witches and chilling vibes, ideal to be read during this period.
Let's see them in more detail:
"Pet Sematary" by Stephen King from Kleidarithmos Publications
When Dr. Louis Creed moves with his family to the quiet town of Ludlow, Maine, the new beginning seems wonderful.
However, there is an invisible threat... The trucks passing by the Creed's house run excessively, judging by the makeshift cemetery in the neighboring woods, where generations of children have buried their beloved pets. Then, both the residents of Ludlow and his nightmares warn Louis not to go beyond the small cemetery. There is another burial place there, which hides a truth that freezes the blood, more terrifying than death itself. And Louis will soon discover that...
sometimes, it's better to be dead!
Yes, we can't talk about creepy books without at least mentioning the king of horror. And yes, the title is misspelled, but on purpose!
For this particular book, King has said that he considers it the scariest one he has written, and I can understand why. Of course, I can't explain it to you without giving away spoilers, so you'll just have to trust me!
So the story follows Dr. Louis, who moves with his family to the quiet town of Ludlow, in a beautiful house. However, in front of this beautiful house, there is a road where trucks run at excessive speed.
This resulted in the creation of a Pet Sematary by the town's children, where they buried their pets that didn't make it across the road. The residents of Ludlow, as well as his nightmares, warn him not to go beyond this small pet cemetery, but because we're talking about a novel, of course he will go further, and he will discover that sometimes, it's better to be dead.
Yes, I know, it sounds creepy. And it's much worse than you imagine. Especially if you're a parent (just saying).
What won me over in this book is the pace of the events.
It starts slowly, happily, with doses of humor that made me bond with the characters. Then things get heavier. And then they get even heavier. And then it ends up being an incredible horror book.
The author tackled and analyzed a very difficult subject, death, and wrote a completely macabre book that takes you through a thousand emotions.
Just what you need for the season, especially if you're a fan of the genre.
Note: Don't read the author's note before finishing the book. I suggest reading it at the end as it reveals quite a bit about the plot.
"Burning Girls" by C.J. Tudor from Kleidarithmos Publications
The Chapel Croft is a picturesque British village in the Sussex area. Life there seems to flow calmly, but behind the bucolic tranquility and local traditions, a suppressed, twisted, and silent society hides, with many guilty secrets. In this environment, the priest Jack Brooks and her teenage daughter Flo settle in with unfavorable relocation. Jack was forced to leave her parish in Nottingham after a tragic event. From the moment they arrive in the village, mother and daughter face strange situations, from accidents to threats to their lives. Jack's dark past comes to the forefront again when she learns that her brother, who was convicted of killing her husband, is about to be released from prison. Bodies are unearthed, people who were considered missing are proven to have been murdered, and Jack's unknown dark past is in danger of being revealed.
"500 years ago eight witnesses were burned at the stake. 30 years ago two girls disappeared without a trace. 2 months ago the priest committed suicide. Welcome to Chapel Croft!"
Yes, yes, I know. Completely catchy introduction. It had me hooked too.
But it gets better.
Recipe for an awesome mystery book:
Weird visions of burning girls
Suicides
Creepy churches
Girls disappearing and no one knows what happened to them
Threats & terror
I won't go on. I've already said too much, but I think it's enough to make anyone understand that this book must be read. And there is no better time than now.
The author managed to create a completely creepy and chilling atmosphere using an ancient chapel and an isolated village, while adding peculiar mysterious and somewhat strange characters, thus putting the cherry on top of this terrifying cake.
Also, the suspense is off the charts as it jumps between present and past, making the reader unable to close the book until they finish it first.
Anyone I have recommended it to has spoken highly of it.
So, now it's your turn.
"The Last House on Nidles Street" by Catriona Ward from Metaichmio Publications
This is the story of a murderer. Of a stolen child. A story of revenge. Death. The story of Ted, who lives with his daughter Lauren and his cat Olivia in an ordinary house at the end of an ordinary street.
All of the above is true. And yet some are lies…
You think you know what is inside the last house on Niddles Street. You think you have read this story before. Here, you are mistaken. Something is buried in the dark forest at the end of Niddles Street. But it is not what you think…
Ted lives on the outskirts of a forest, with only his honorary cat, Olivia, and his eleven-year-old daughter, Lauren, for company. When he gets confused, he calls them both "little one". Ted has always been strange - but Olivia's concern intensifies as his behavior becomes increasingly bizarre. Ted creates fake profiles on dating sites, comes home late with hands that smell of bones and fear. He spends whole nights in the forest, digging. And why did he open holes in the door of the broken refrigerator?
A mysterious woman, who believes that Ted had something to do with the disappearance of her little sister many years ago, moves into the abandoned house next door…
When Lauren disappears, Olivia's suspicions turn to terror. As the truth about her strange connection to Lauren becomes apparent, Olivia begins to realize that she never really knew Ted, the man she has lived with for so many years. Everything Olivia thinks she knows about herself and the world is turned upside down, revealing a reality beyond imagination. And in the end, she will have to decide whether to take or save a life…
A literary psychological thriller full of twists, and a thorough exploration of how far human nature can go to protect a child from terror.
I have talked about this particular book in another article of mine, but honestly I couldn't write about weird & scary books without including this one.
Confirmed, anyone who has read it, I believe can attest that it blew their mind at least a little.
For a long time you don't understand anything, but not in a bad way. In the sense of "I absolutely need to know what will happen," and then you find out, and you're hooked.
Perfect;
The plot is as follows:
In the last house on Niddles Street, where the windows are boarded up, lives a family of three:
- Ted, who always drinks beers alone and loves recipes.
- Lauren, a teenager who is not allowed to go outside.
- Olivia, a cat who reads the Bible. The three of them are connected by a terrible secret, which will come to light [with great difficulty] when a new neighbor moves into the house next door.
Of the 3 books in the article, this is the easiest one to write. So if you're looking for something that will grab you right away, here it is. And it's worth 100%.
So these are my choices for books worth reading during Halloween.
If you have read any, I would love to know what you thought.
If you haven't read any, what exactly are you waiting for???
