Convector Heater Buying Guide: How It Works and Which One to Choose!
The convectors (Convectors or convector heaters) belong to the category of electric heating appliances, and their operation is based on heating the cold air that enters the device naturally, through a shielded aluminum resistance that does not glow red (cold resistance). The delivery of warm air into the room is also achieved through its natural flow.
Tip: By definition, convectors are not connected to any air-flow assistance. However, there are models available on the market that include a fan. The presence of such a mechanism can reduce the time required to heat the room, but it eliminates the advantage of natural air circulation, which reduces dust in the space.
Advantages
1. Autonomy of operation adjustment
Through their thermostat, you can choose the temperature of each room and/or temporarily interrupt the operation in spaces that do not need to stay warm, saving energy and money.
2. Immediate heating performance in the space
This advantage is enhanced in models with fans.
3. Easy and low-cost installation and placement
For the operation of low-power heaters (up to 2000 Watts), only plugging the plug into the socket is required, while many models do not require additional support (floor placement).
4. Minimal energy losses
Almost all consumed energy is converted into heat.
5. Absence of dust lifting and burning
The natural airflow does not cause dust lifting in the room, while the cold resistance prevents dust burning. In the cases of models with fans, the advantage related to dust lifting is eliminated.
6. Quiet operation
The airflow is done naturally. This advantage does not fully apply in the cases of models with fans, as their operation slightly increases the generated noise.
7. Absence of emission of combustion gases in the space
8. Low purchase cost
Disadvantages
1. Inability to take advantage of the night electricity tariff
- Due to the immediate heat output in the space, electricity will be consumed more frequently during the period when the cheaper tariff of the Public Power Corporation (DEI) does not apply.
2. Higher energy consumption compared to air conditioning units of the same thermal power
3. Cold zones in remote areas from the bodies
- If the space is large, cold zones may be created in areas that are further away from the placement point of the heater.
4. Need for a separate line in the electrical panel
- High-power heater models require a separate line in the electrical panel, increasing the cost of installation.
Space heaters are a very good solution for small spaces, where the appropriate model will not require additional electrical installation and will immediately cover heating needs without the presence of cold zones. Unlike common air heaters, they are suitable for people with respiratory problems or asthma, as they do not allow dust to be lifted in the space. At the same time, they are considered an ideal choice for a child's room due to the non-emission of exhaust gases.
Power Selection
The selection of the power of the heaters is the key feature that you need to decide on before making a purchase. Installing heaters with lower power than you need can hinder energy savings, as they may remain constantly in operation trying to achieve the temperature you have set using the thermostat.
Similarly, installing units with higher power than required can significantly increase the purchase and installation costs, without you noticing a substantial difference in the heating of the space. Below is a sample table that correlates the power of the heater with the area of the space it is intended for, aiming to provide a sense of the appropriate size range for each case:
Possible deviations from the above empirical rule are mainly due to:
- The insulation and construction materials of the building
- The prevailing external temperature of the area
- The floor of the apartment
- The orientation of the space
- The layout of the house (high ceiling, internal staircase)
Placement and Electrical Installation of a Convector Heater
Convector heaters can be installed either on the wall or on the floor of the house. If your space requires more than one unit, it is a good idea to place them around the perimeter, so that the heat is distributed harmoniously throughout the space. For better performance of convector heaters, it is recommended to place them in areas with the greatest heat loss (e.g. next to windows or balcony doors).
There are wall-mounted convector heaters which, with the appropriate bases (support feet), can also be installed on the floor.
