Baby Bath Buying Guide

Baby Bath Buying Guide

Choosing the right baby bath depends mainly on two factors: the size and layout of your bathroom, as well as your baby’s developmental stage.

A functional baby bath will provide stability and safety for your baby while protecting your back during the daily routine.

1. Age

Your baby’s support needs change significantly as they grow:

  • Newborn to 6 months (Full support): At this stage, your baby cannot support their head or body on their own. You’ll need a baby bath with an integrated ergonomic recliner or a slot for a removable support sling/fabric hammock. This keeps your baby’s head safely above the water and leaves your hands free.

  • 6 to 12 months (Sitting independently): Once your baby can sit steadily without help, they’ll need room to move and play. You can choose a two-position baby bath (reclined for infants / seated for older babies) or a ring-style bath seat (bath ring) with suction cups, which attaches directly inside the full-size bathtub.

  • 12 months and up (Toddler): You can now bathe your child directly in the family bathtub, with a good non-slip mat. If you only have a shower, a spacious inflatable or deep foldable baby bath is the ideal solution.

2. Space

The available space determines the size, storage method and height that will work best for you:

Very small bathroom or limited storage space

  • Foldable baby bath (Foldable): Made from durable silicone and plastic, it folds completely flat (about 7–10 cm thick). You can hang it on a wall hook or store it between the washing machine and the bathroom cabinet.

  • Bath cushion for the sink: A soft insert that fits into the sink. It’s extremely convenient for the first 3–4 months and takes up no space at all.

Bathroom with a shower only

  • Baby bath with a freestanding stand (legs): A lifesaver for your back. You won’t need to bend over or kneel on the shower floor. Just make sure it has a drainage hose so you can empty the water easily.

  • Vertical cylindrical baby bath: Takes up very little floor space in the shower and lets your baby sit in a natural foetal position.

Bathroom with a standard bathtub

  • Ergonomic baby bath with bathtub supports: Special arms “bridge” the sides of your bathtub, bringing your baby to a comfortable height so you don’t strain your body.

  • Bathtub divider (Bath Dam): A clever silicone barrier that divides the full-size bathtub in half, creating a baby-sized bathing area while saving water and time.

Large bathroom or spacious nursery

  • Bath-Changing Unit (2-in-1): A unit on wheels with a changing table on top, a baby bath underneath, and shelves for nappies and towels. Everything you need is kept together in one place.

✨ What Should You Choose?

Type of Baby Bath Suitable Age Ideal Space Main Advantage What to Watch Out For
Foldable (Silicone) 0–24 months Small bathrooms, travel Minimal storage space Do not fold the baby bath while it is still wet, as water trapped in the silicone folds can cause mold to grow very easily.
With Metal Stand 0–6/9 months Shower stalls, small bathrooms No bending required Check the stand’s weight limit (usually up to 11–15 kg)
Bath-Changing Table Unit 0–12 months Spacious bathrooms / rooms Everything in one piece of furniture Bulky and difficult to move
Classic Ergonomic (Hard) 0–12+ months Large bathrooms with a bathtub Durable and affordable Takes up quite a bit of space when not in use
Bath Seat (Ring) 6–15 months Standard bathtub Freedom of movement for play Requires a smooth surface for the suction cups to adhere to

4. Extra Features

  • Drain plug and hose: A full baby bath weighs 10–15 kg. Don’t lift all that weight to empty it; opt for a model with a drain plug at the bottom or a drain hose.

  • Temperature indicator: Choose a model with a built-in thermometer or a heat-sensitive plug that changes color when the water exceeds 37°C.

  • Non-slip surface: Make sure it has soft, elastic material (TPE) both where the baby sits and on the support legs, to keep it from slipping on the tiles.

  • Certified materials: Check that the plastic is free of BPA and phthalates, with rounded edges and no sharp points.

Choose primarily based on your own physical comfort and the layout of your home: if you have back problems, a raised stand is essential, while if you’re short on space, a good folding model will make things much easier.
