Buying Guide: How to Choose a Clamp Meter
The importance of True RMS, DC current measurement, and everything you need to watch out for.
The clamp meter is one of the most essential tools in the hands of every electrician, maintenance technician, as well as the demanding hobbyist (DIYer). Its great advantage compared to a simple multimeter is that it allows you to measure the current flowing through a conductor with complete safety, without having to cut the cable or interrupt the circuit.
But how do you choose the right model among hundreds of options? The two most critical features you need to understand are True RMS and the ability to measure DC current. Let's see why they make a difference.
1. What is True RMS and why do you (probably) need it?
Many budget clamp meters use the "average" method to measure alternating current (AC). This works just fine if you're measuring "clean" circuits, such as old incandescent bulbs or simple heating resistors (pure sine waves).
However, the modern electrical grid is full of non-linear loads. What does that mean? LED lights, computers, inverters, power supplies, and air conditioning systems "distort" the current. A simple clamp meter without True RMS (True Root Mean Square) can give an incorrect reading in such circuits, with deviations reaching as much as 40%!
The conclusion: If you are a professional or want absolute accuracy when measuring modern devices and panels, choosing a clamp meter labeled True RMS is the only way.
2. Measuring Alternating (AC) vs. Direct (DC) Current
This is the most common mistake when buying: Most people assume that all clamp meters measure every type of current. In reality, most entry-level models measure only alternating current (AC) with their clamp, which is enough for a standard household electrical panel.
But why is DC current becoming essential now? The market is changing rapidly. Today, if you work with:
Photovoltaic installations
Electric vehicle charging stations
Car, boat, or UPS batteries
Electronic systems and automation...then you definitely need a clamp meter that measures AC/DC current.
Skroutz Tip: Pay close attention to the specifications! Many budget meters measure DC Voltage with the leads, but NOT DC Current with the clamp. Make sure that the filters or specs clearly state "Current Measurement: AC/DC".
3. 4 other key features to look out for

Jaw Opening: Make sure the "clamp" fits the cables you’ll be measuring. For household use, an opening of 25-30mm is usually enough, but for industrial, thick supply cables you may need a larger diameter (or even a clamp meter with a flexible loop - iFlex).
Safety Category: Safety is paramount. For work on the main home electrical panel, you need an instrument certified at least CAT III 600V. If you work on industrial or outdoor supply lines, look for CAT IV.
Additional Measurements: A good clamp meter also works as a multimeter. Look for models that measure Voltage (Volt), Resistance (Ohm), Continuity (the familiar "beep" that shows the cable is not broken), Capacitor Capacitance, and Temperature.
Smart Features (Bluetooth): Modern instruments offer Bluetooth connectivity. You can connect the clamp meter to the panel, close the cover, and view the readings—or record them (data logging)—with complete safety from your phone screen via an app.
The final decision (Based on profile)
For the casual DIYer: If you just want to monitor the water heater’s consumption or find out which fuse "tripped", a basic AC current model from a reliable brand (e.g. Uni-T, Mastech) will cover you at very low cost.
For the Professional / Modern Installer: If your work involves photovoltaics, inverters, heat pumps and industrial motors, you don’t cut corners. Choose a True RMS model, with AC/DC current measurement capability, high CAT Rating and inrush current measurement function from top brands (e.g. Fluke, UNI-T Pro series, Kyoritsu).
