How to Choose a Thermal Camera: Sensor Analysis, Temperature Range & Application Scope

The choice of the right thermal camera depends exclusively on the type of work you want to cover. Whether you are a professional technician (plumber, electrician, energy inspector) or you want to detect heat loss and moisture in your home, there are three key parameters you should evaluate before buying.

1. Thermal sensor resolution (IR Resolution)

Thermal resolution has nothing to do with your phone’s camera resolution. It expresses the number of temperature measurement points recorded by the infrared sensor.

  • Up to 160x120 pixels: Ideal choice for basic checks, such as detecting leaks in visible pipes, finding overheated fuses in a home panel, or simple household use.

  • 256x192 pixels: The sweet spot of price and performance for professionals. It offers a clear image for energy inspections, underfloor heating checks, and fault diagnosis in vehicles.

  • 384x288 pixels and above: Essential for industrial maintenance, photovoltaic park inspections, or building inspections from a distance, where detail accuracy is critical.

2. Temperature range & thermal sensitivity

  • Measurement range: For building inspections and plumbing, a range from -20°C to 150°C or 300°C is more than enough. However, if you work in industrial facilities, foundries, or engine exhaust systems, you will need a model with a range up to 550°C or higher.

  • Thermal sensitivity (NETD): Measured in millikelvin (mK). The smaller the number (e.g. < 40mK compared to < 50mK), the more subtle temperature variations the camera can detect. This is crucial when looking for hidden moisture behind plaster.

3. Device form by application field

  • Smartphone Attachments (USB-C / Lightning): Attach directly to your phone, turning it into a thermal camera. They are the most affordable solution (often under €200) and extremely portable.

  • Compact / Pocket Size: Small standalone devices the size of a smartphone. They fit in your pocket, withstand drops, and are ready to use in seconds.

  • Handheld (Pistol Grip): The classic ergonomic design with a trigger. It offers long battery life, durable construction (IP rating), and is ideal for long inspections on the job site.

  • Thermal Monocular: A special category of monoculars for nature observation, hunting, law enforcement, and perimeter security.

Features worth paying attention to

  • MSX / Image Blending technology: Combines the outline of a visual photo over the thermal image, making objects, sockets, and text much more distinct.

  • Connectivity & Reports: Look for models with Wi-Fi or Bluetooth if you need to generate professional reports (PDF reports) on the spot via a mobile app for your clients.
