Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right Docking Station for Your Laptop
A Docking Station turns your laptop into a full workstation, connecting monitors, keyboard, mouse, and charger with a single cable.
Check your laptop’s port
Before buying a Docking Station, make sure of the type of USB-C port your device has:
- USB-C with DisplayPort: Supports image, audio, and data transfer.
- Thunderbolt (3 / 4 / 5): Offers the highest speeds, charging, and support for multiple monitors.
- Standard USB-C (Data Only): Transfers files only. If you connect a monitor, no image will be displayed.
What applies to Apple MacBooks
M1 / M2 (Base models): They natively support only 1 external display. For connectivity with 2+ monitors, a Docking Station with DisplayLink technology is required.
M3 / M4 / M5 (Base models): They support 2 external displays without DisplayLink, provided the laptop lid remains closed. If you want to use the laptop screen alongside 2 external displays, DisplayLink is required.
Pro / Max / Ultra & Intel processors: They support multiple displays directly through a Thunderbolt Docking Station
Laptop Charging (Power Delivery - PD)
The Docking Station reserves approximately 10W–15W for its own operation.
If your laptop needs a 65W charger, choose a 80W–100W charger for connection to the Dock, so you can ensure full charging speed.
Docking Station Type: Portable or Desktop?
- Portable (Travel Hubs): Small, lightweight, powered by the laptop. Suitable for travel and basic connections (HDMI, 2-3 USB).
- Desktop (Active Docks): Plug into the wall, offer a wide range of ports (Ethernet, SD Card reader, DisplayPort) and stable power supply.
