Buying Guide for Life Jackets

If you’re getting ready for Jet Ski, skiing, wakeboard, SUP, kayak or any other extreme water activity, the life jacket is not just an accessory – it is your most loyal ally for your safety.

They are designed to offer you comfort, freedom of movement and protection from impacts. Let’s see how you can choose the ideal one for you!

1. Buoyancy (Newton)

The ability of a life jacket to keep you on the surface of the water is measured in Newton (N). For water sports, the two main categories you will encounter are:

  • 50 Newton (Buoyancy Aids): These are the most popular vests for sports (SUP, kayak, windsurf, Jet Ski). They are lightweight, fit the body perfectly and do not prevent you from swimming.

Important: They assume that you know how to swim and are intended for use near the shore or in places where immediate help is available, as they do not have the ability to turn an unconscious person face up in the water.
  • 100 Newton (Lifejackets): They offer greater buoyancy and have a special collar to keep the head out of the water. They are ideal for children, for people who do not feel 100% confident in swimming, or for speedboat trips in open sea.

2. Material selection

When looking for a water sports vest, you will see that they are divided into two main construction materials. Each has its own advantages:

Neoprene vests (premium & comfort)

Neoprene is the material used to make diving suits.

  • Why choose it: It stretches and hugs the body like a second skin, offering top freedom of movement (ideal for wakeboard, skiing and Jet Ski). In addition, it provides thermal insulation from cold water and acts as an excellent protective “cushion” if you fall into the water at high speed.
  • Disadvantage: It is slightly heavier when wet and costs a bit more.

Nylon / cordura vests (value for money & durability)

These life jackets use nylon fabric on the outside and ready-made foam panels on the inside.

  • Why choose it: They are extremely lightweight, dry very quickly and are much more affordable. They are easily adjusted with straps, which means one life jacket can fit more than one person (e.g. for the guests on your boat).
  • Disadvantage: They are bulkier and do not have the elasticity of neoprene.

3. Correct size & fit

The life jacket must fit snugly, but without restricting your breathing. If it is too large, the moment you fall into the water it will ride up and cover your face.

  • Check the weight and chest size: Manufacturers always provide a high-level size chart based on your weight (e.g. 60-70kg, 70-90kg) as well as chest circumference.
  • How to measure: Take a measuring tape, pass it under your armpits, and measure the widest part of your chest (preferably while wearing the swimsuit or hydro suit you will be using).
  • Comparison: If your measurement is 98 centimeters, look for the size that covers that number (e.g. Chest: 95-102cm).

If you are between two sizes (borderline), check the material and adjustability of the life jacket to decide:

  • If you choose Neoprene: Neoprene has elasticity. If you are between two sizes, choose the smaller one, because in the water the material stretches slightly and “opens up.” You want it to fit tightly at first (like a hug).
  • If you choose Nylon: Nylon does not stretch at all. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one, as nylon life jackets have adjustable straps (3 or 4 clips) so you can tighten it as needed and tailor it to you.

4. Extra features

  • D-Ring (safety ring): If you drive a Jet Ski, it is essential that the life jacket has a plastic or metal ring low down, so you can attach the kill-switch there (the engine safety cord).
  • Crotch strap: Very common on children’s life jackets. It passes between the legs and prevents the life jacket from slipping up and coming off over the child’s head.
  • Bright colors & reflective elements: Prefer bright colors (yellow, orange, lime green, bright red) so you are immediately visible from a distance to other boats or in the event of a rescue.
