Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right Products for Your Motorcycle Chain
Let’s be honest: the chain is the “heart” of your motorcycle’s drivetrain. It is the part that transfers all the engine’s power to the rear wheel, while at the same time taking on dust, rain, mud, and miles. If you leave it to chance, the only sure thing is that soon it will cost you an expensive sprocket-and-chain set, or even worse, leave you stranded on the road.
Proper chain care doesn’t require effort, it requires the right approach and the right products. Let’s see exactly how to choose what you need, and how to do the process like a professional.
➡ When does the chain need lubrication?
Don’t wait until you hear your chain squeak or see it rust to remember it. The general rule says:
- Every 400 to 500 kilometers in normal road conditions.
- Immediately after rain or washing the motorcycle (water and soap remove the lubricating film).
- After every off-road ride, as dust and mud dry out the chain instantly.
➡ What will you need for proper cleaning?
If you spray over old dirt, all you’ll do is create a sticky paste that will wear out the seals (O-rings / X-rings).
To do the job properly, you will need:
- Specialized Cleaner (Chain Cleaner): Dissolves dried grease without damaging the chain’s sensitive rubber parts (seals). Choose a water-soluble one so it rinses off easily with water.
- Special Chain Brush: A “P”-shaped brush (three-sided) that wraps around the chain and cleans all sides at once.
- Microfiber cloths or paper towels: To wipe away the residue.
- A piece of cardboard: To place behind the chain while spraying, so you don’t get your tire and rim dirty.
➡ How to lubricate properly
- Warm up the chain: Take a short 5-10 minute ride. When the chain is warm, the pores of the metal and seals open up, allowing the lubricant to penetrate much better.
- Clean and dry: Spray with Chain Cleaner, scrub with the brush, rinse, and dry the chain thoroughly with the cloth. It must be completely dry before lubricating.
- Spray in the right spot: Turn the wheel by hand and spray the lubricant on the inner side of the chain (where it contacts the sprockets), not on the outside. With the centrifugal force of movement, the oil will spread everywhere on its own.
- Let it "settle": Don't ride immediately! Let the lubricant dry for at least 15-20 minutes (or even better, overnight). That way, it will adhere to the metal and won't splatter on your rim and pants at the first throttle twist.
➡ Lubricant selection guide: What type are you?
- Street / On-Road Spray: Ideal if you ride mainly on asphalt (naked, sport, touring motorcycles or scooters). It is very sticky to withstand high speeds.
- Chain Wax: The ultimate trend for street motorcycles. It dries completely, leaves a hard film, and keeps your rim spotless.
- Off-Road / Dry Lube: If you love dirt (Enduro, On-Off). It is thin and does not attract dust and sand.
- Wet / All-Weather Lube: For those who ride daily (e.g. delivery) in all weather conditions. It is not easily washed away by rainwater.
