Buyer's Guide for Swim Trainers

Don’t know which life jacket is ideal for your child? Let’s find out together!

If you're looking for a swimming aid that goes one step further than the classic swim ring or arm bands, the category of training life jackets or swimtrainers is the ideal choice, especially for babies and toddlers who are having their first contact with water. They are designed with the main purpose of keeping the child in a horizontal swimming position (around 40 degrees) and providing safety, while at the same time leaving the arms and legs free so they can learn their first movements in the water.

1. Material - inflatable vs solid

Material plays an important role both in the price of the life jacket and in its technology and operation. Below you can see the 2 main materials from which a swimtrainer can be made and their differences:

  • Classic inflatables (Inflatables): This is the most well-known and affordable category, since the prices of these life jackets usually range from €5 to €25. They are made of PVC and feature multiple air chambers for safety in case one section gets punctured.
If you want such an inflatable life jacket, look for brands like Freds Swim Academy, Intex, Bestway or Swim Essentials.

  • Solid inflatable vests (Pearl Foam): These are an extremely popular premium category of life vests, with prices often ranging from €40 to €100. They have the advantage that they never puncture and do not need inflating, as their core is made of special, lightweight foam. They feature an outer fabric that dries quickly and is very gentle on the baby’s skin. They may cost a little more than inflatable ones, but they are worth the investment, as they promise greater safety and durability.

If you want a solid life vest, look for brands such as Mambobaby, bebeLOGIC.

2. Fastening system & safety

The main thing a parent looks for in a swimtrainer is safety. The child does not simply sit inside the life jacket, but needs to be properly strapped in and secured. So, before buying it is good to check the following:

  • Straps / Harnesses: The life jacket should have adjustable straps that pass like a vest around the shoulders or even under the child’s legs, for maximum safety.

  • 5-point harness: The most advanced life jackets have 5-point straps that "lock" the infant in complete safety, preventing any slipping downward or dangerous forward tipping.

3. The sunshade

In any case, but especially if the baby for whom the swim trainer is intended is under 2 years old, it is a good idea to look for swim trainers with a sunshade with UV protection (integrated or removable). The sunshade is now considered a must-have feature, it protects the infant’s sensitive skin and eyes from direct exposure to the sun, while allowing them to enjoy the water without discomfort.

4. Age & weight

The 2 factors based on which you can choose the ideal life jacket for your baby are age and weight. These 2 are interconnected and it is a good idea to take them into account equally before making a purchase.

Most swimtrainers are aimed at ages from 3-6 months to 4-6 years:

  • For infants (6 - 24 months) you can choose a life jacket with maximum support in the belly area and safety straps. At this age, stability is everything.
  • For toddlers (2 - 4 years) you can look for lighter support that emphasizes arm and leg coordination.

However, it is good to always check the maximum supported weight (e.g. up to 11kg, up to 15kg, up to 18kg) provided by the manufacturer, as it is a much more reliable indicator than age. Every child develops at a different pace, so a life jacket that may be suitable for an infant (up to 24 months) may not fit more developed infants.

5. Design & appearance

Finally, although the basic shape of a swimtrainer is the classic ring (where the back is open so the straps can fasten), there are now many impressive designs available on the market. You can find life jackets in the shape of Unicorns and Dinosaurs, all the way to Cars and Airplanes. You will also find a wide variety of bright colors (pink, yellow, light blue, red), which help the life jacket stand out in the water.
