Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right Microfiber Cloth for Your Car

We all want our car to shine like new, but choosing the right microfiber cloth isn’t always as simple as it seems.

With this simple guide, you will learn exactly what to look for in the filters and features to make the best choice!

The Weight of Fabric: What is GSM?

GSM (Grams per Square Meter) indicates how many grams one square meter of fabric weighs. Simply put, it shows us how "dense" and thick a fabric is.

Attention to misunderstanding: A higher GSM does not mean that the fabric is more durable, but that it is thicker. Very thick fabrics are more delicate, while thinner ones withstand heavy use better.

Each thickness is designed for a different job:

  • Low GSM (200 - 300) | For Glass & Interior Cleaning: These are thin cloths, very durable through multiple washes and leave no lint behind. They are ideal for cleaning windows, screens, dashboards, interior plastics, and leather seats.

  • Medium GSM (350 - 500) | For Wax & General Use: These are the "all-purpose" cloths. They are soft enough for paint and comfortable to handle. They are used for applying or removing wax, for quick cleaning with spray (quick detailer), and for waterless washing.

  • High GSM (550 - 1000+) | Exclusively for Drying: These are very thick, fluffy cloths that work like sponges. They are used only to absorb water from the car body after washing, to prevent scratches.

The Weave of the Cloth (Weave)

Technology has advanced and now GSM is not the only thing that matters. The weave of the cloth plays a huge role:

  • Twisted Loop: The top choice for drying your car. These cloths, even at medium GSM (e.g. 500-600), absorb twice as much water as classic thick cloths, glide like a feather over the paint, and dry much faster after use.

  • Waffle Weave: Cloths with a surface that resembles a waffle. This is the ideal weave for glass, as it traps cleaning liquids and moisture without leaving streaks or marks.

The Blend

Microfiber cloths are made from a mix of Polyester and Polyamide. In the specifications, you will see it as a percentage:

  • 70/30 Ratio: This is the premium blend. The cloth is extremely soft, safe for paint, and very absorbent.

  • 80/20 Ratio: This is the most common and economical blend. It is great for everyday tasks and interior cleaning.

Attention to the Edges (Seams)

If you are buying a cloth that will touch the exterior paint of your car, avoid cloths with hard, cheap seams on the edges, as they can scratch the clear coat. Prefer:

  • Edgeless cloths: Cloths that are laser-cut and have no seams on the edges.

  • Cloths with satin/silk piping: Their edges are covered with very soft fabric for maximum protection.

 The Golden Rule for Washing

Did you buy the perfect cloth? If you wash it wrong, you'll ruin it from day one. Keep these 3 rules in mind:

  1. Never use fabric softener: Fabric softener "sits" on the microfibers and clogs them. The cloth will stop absorbing water and will just spread the dirt around.

  2. Only liquid detergent: Wash the cloths in the washing machine at 30-40°C with simple liquid detergent (without extra fragrances or softeners).

  3. No high heat: Do not put them in a hot dryer and do not lay them on a radiator. Microfibers are essentially plastic and with too much heat they will melt and become brittle.
