Motorcycle Top Case Buying Guide

Choosing the right roof box is important for comfort, daily life, and the safety of your belongings. The following guide analyzes step-by-step everything you need to know based on your needs.

1. Capacity (How many liters do you need?)

Capacity is measured in liters, determines what you can carry, and affects the center of gravity.

Liters (L) What fits / Ideal use
Up to 20 liters The absolute essentials. Fits rain gear, a small lock, documents or a tablet. Does not fit a helmet. Ideal for small mopeds, city scooters, or compact naked motorcycles.
21 - 30 liters The entry-level for a helmet. Fits exactly 1 Jet (open-face) helmet or a small Full Face, along with a few small items. Ideal for daily commuting.
41 - 50 liters The golden mean for the city. Comfortably fits 1 large Full Face or modular helmet, plus a motorcycle jacket or supermarket groceries.
Over 50 liters For traveling. Fits 2 Full Face helmets (depending on their shape, usually from 46L and up). Designed for medium and large motorcycles.

2. Material: Aluminum

Aluminum top cases have become the ultimate trend, especially in the Adventure / On-Off motorcycle category, and not without reason.

  • Durability & Security: They are extremely difficult to break into or break compared to plastic ones. They withstand falls and tough off-road use.
  • Shape: Due to their squared shape, they make 100% use of their internal space, while allowing you to easily strap additional items (e.g. tent, mat) to their lid with straps.
  • Aesthetics: They offer that travel look that fits perfectly on motorcycles like GS, Africa Twin, Tracer, etc.

3. Capabilities / Locking Systems

When we talk about Monokey and Monolock, we are referring to the two patented systems by GIVI (which have become standard in the market). Their main difference lies in the weight they can withstand.

Monokey

  • Use: Designed for medium and large motorcycles.
  • Weight resistance: Usually withstands up to 10 kg of load.
  • Quality: More robust construction, thicker materials on the mounting plate. With the same key you unlock the top case and detach it from the bike.

Monolock

  • Use: Designed mainly for scooters, mopeds, and small city motorcycles.
  • Weight resistance: Withstands up to 3 kg of load.
  • Advantage: Almost always, Monolock top cases include the mounting plate in their packaging, reducing the total purchase cost.

4. Type: ATV Trunks (Quads)

ATV trunks (All-Terrain Vehicles) are a completely separate category, as they are designed for the specific driving conditions of these vehicles.

  • Ergonomic Design: They are usually mounted on the rear (or front) rack of the quad and have a "U" or "pie" shape. Many of them also function as a seat/backrest for the passenger.
  • Absolute Waterproofing: Since quads go through mud, water, and dust, ATV trunks feature heavy-duty rubber seals to keep the interior 100% dry.
  • Large Capacity: They often exceed 70-80 liters, allowing for the transport of tools, straps, fuel containers, and camping equipment.
