Buying Guide for Motorcycle GPS & Mobile Mounts

Buying Guide for Motorcycle GPS & Mobile Mounts

By purchasing a mount for your motorcycle's phone or GPS, you are investing in your safety and driving convenience. With so many options, it’s easy to get confused.

Below is a comprehensive buying guide, based on the main categories you will find on the market, to help you choose exactly what suits you.

1. Mount Placement

The first step is to see where the mount can be installed on your motorcycle.

On the Handlebar: this is the most classic and popular choice. It clamps around the handlebar tube with a special collar.

  • Advantages: Excellent stability and easy access.
  • Ideal for: Naked, adventure, custom, and generally motorcycles with a free, exposed handlebar.

On the Mirror: the mount screws directly onto the mirror arm or into the hole.

  • Ideal for: Scooters and mopeds, where the handlebar is “covered” with plastics and there is no free tube for a classic mount.

2. Type

Depending on whether you are starting from scratch or want to upgrade something you already have:

  • Mounts (Complete Sets): Include everything you need to get started: the system that attaches to the motorcycle, the arm, and the holder for your phone. If this is your first time buying, this is for you!
  • Mount Accessories (Spare Parts / Modding): If you already have a system (e.g., RAM Mount or Quad Lock type) and want to change only the clip, get a longer arm, or an anti-vibration accessory, then you buy individual parts.

3. Device Support (How does the phone “attach”?)

Here you choose how the mount will hold your valuable device:

With Adjustable Arm (type "X-Grip" or Clamps):

  • Features mechanical “clamps” with a spring or screw that grip the phone from the sides.
  • Fits almost all phones, regardless of their size or case.

With Case (Closed Type):

  • Offers ultimate protection from dust, stones, and scratches.
  • The phone goes inside a special, closed case which then snaps onto the motorcycle mount.

With Clip (Quick Lock / Mechanical Fastening):

  • Very stylish, minimal, and the phone goes in/out in a second.
  • Requires a special case for your phone (or adhesive adapter) that “snaps” and locks onto the mount with a simple motion (twist & lock).

4. Extra Features

The weather is unpredictable, so waterproofing is a big issue.

  • Waterproof (with Case): If you ride in winter, travel, or work in delivery, a mount with an integrated waterproof case (or full waterproof cover) is essential. It protects your phone from heavy rain, but keep in mind that in summer your phone may heat up inside the “greenhouse” of the case.
  • Non-Waterproof (Open Type): If your phone is already waterproof (IP68) or if you only ride in good weather, open mounts (with arm or clip) are preferable because your device is better ventilated.

Extra Tip

If you have a modern smartphone with a high-end camera, be sure to look for a mount or accessory with a vibration dampening system. The vibrations from the motorcycle engine can damage your camera!
