Buying Guide for Motorcycle Intercom
Buying a motorcycle intercom is one of the most essential investments for a rider, as it directly affects both safety and ergonomics while riding.
Whether you commute daily within the city and need instant access to GPS voice directions and calls, or travel in large groups (Group Riding) where coordination is necessary, choosing the right device requires attention.
1. Type
The first thing you need to decide is how many devices you need right away.
- Single: Includes one main unit and a set of headphones/microphone. Choose this if you mainly ride alone and want it for listening to GPS, music, and answering calls, or if the rider you go out with already has their own device.
- Twin / Dual: Includes two complete systems in the same box. This is the ideal (and most economical) solution if you always carry a passenger (your partner) or if you want to buy together with your best friend so you can talk during rides, as they come pre-paired from the factory to connect with each other.
2. Connectivity & Number of Riders
This is where the usability of the device is determined according to your riding style:
- Up to 2 riders: Ideal if you want communication exclusively with your passenger or with one more friend on another motorcycle (Bike-to-Bike).
- Up to 4, 6 or 8 riders: Suitable for small or medium groups who go on trips together.
- More than 12 riders: Belongs to the premium device category. If you participate in large motorcycle clubs or organized tours, you need such a device.
Tip you need to know: Devices for multiple riders are divided into two technologies. Bluetooth (more affordable) connect like a "chain"; if a link breaks (e.g., the 3rd rider moves away), communication is lost for the rest. Mesh (more expensive) creates a "net"; if someone goes out of range, the rest can still talk and the missing one rejoins automatically when they get closer.
3. Features & Conveniences
- With Bluetooth: Most devices have Bluetooth to connect to your smartphone, GPS, or your motorcycle's multimedia system.
- Compatible with App: There are devices that come with a mobile app (iOS/Android). Through the app, you can easily adjust settings, update the firmware, and manage connections with your group without pressing the device's tiny buttons with your gloves on.
4. Extra Functions
- Active Noise Cancellation: Perhaps the most critical feature for sound quality. This technology "cuts" wind and engine noise, allowing your interlocutor to hear you crystal clear, even if you're riding at 130 km/h.
- FM / Radio: If you like listening to your favorite stations during your daily commute or on trips without using your phone's data, look for a device with a built-in FM receiver.
- Video Recording: There are a few hybrid devices that also include an action camera. If you want to record your routes for safety reasons (dashcam) or to keep memories without filling your helmet with extra mounts and cameras, it's a very interesting solution.
5. What else you should pay attention to
To avoid mistakes, definitely check these before you buy:
- Compatibility with your Helmet: Almost all intercoms are Universal, but some helmets (e.g., Shoei, Schuberth, AGV) have special slots for specific, custom intercom models that "hide" inside the helmet for better aerodynamics.
- Type of Microphone in the package: If you have a Full Face helmet, you need the wired button-type microphone. If you have a Modular (flip-up) or Jet (open-face), you need a microphone with a flexible boom. Make sure the package includes what you need (many companies include both).
- Waterproofing: Look for IP65, IP67 certification or "Waterproof". In Greece we may have sun, but if you get caught in a heavy downpour during a trip, you don't want your device to get damaged.
- Speakers (Sound by...): If you are a music lover, focus on premium models that collaborate with top audio companies (e.g., Cardo with JBL or Sena with Harman Kardon). The difference in quality and bass is huge!
My advice: If you ride alone in the city, get an affordable Single with Bluetooth and ANC. If you travel with friends, invest in a device with Mesh technology for peace of mind.
