An important change in road safety will be implemented from January 1, 2027, as the contents of car first aid kits in Greece are being modernized after decades. With decision D30/45652/2026, the first aid kit is now aligned with European standards (DIN 13164:2022) and becomes an essential rescue tool.

Which vehicles does it concern?

The obligation applies to all road motor vehicles circulating within the Greek territory.

  • Who is exempt: Only two-wheelers (motorcycles).

  • Responsible party: The owner or the driver of the vehicle is responsible for the existence and proper maintenance of the equipment.

The list of the 16 mandatory items

Forget simple cotton and alcohol. The new first aid kit must contain specific materials with CE marking:

  1. Rescue Blanket (Isothermal): Metallized, at least 210 x 160 cm.

  2. Adhesive Tape (Roll): 5m x 2.5cm.

  3. Set of 14 Plasters: Various sizes.

  4. Sterile Bandage (Small): 6 x 8 cm.

  5. Sterile Bandage (Medium): 8 x 10 cm.

  6. Sterile Bandage (Large): 10 x 12 cm.

  7. Burn Dressing / Gauze: 60 x 80 cm.

  8. Wound Compresses: 10 x 10 cm (in pairs).

  9. Elastic Bandage (Narrow): 6 cm x 4 m.

  10. Elastic Bandage (Wide): 8 cm x 4 m.

  11. Triangular Bandage: 96 x 96 x 136 cm.

  12. First Aid Scissors: Atraumatic (specially designed for cutting clothes/dressings).

  13. Disposable Gloves: Medical, made of vinyl or nitrile.

  14. Wet Cleaning Wipes: For the skin.

  15. Medical Mask: Type IIR or FFP2.

Placement and Maintenance Rules

  • Accessibility: It must be in a readily accessible location (not buried under luggage).

  • No padlocks: It is forbidden to be locked.

  • Clean use: No other items (e.g. tools) are allowed to be stored inside the box.

  • Expiration Date: The materials must be renewed at least every two years. Due to high temperatures in the summer, the material deteriorates faster, so regular inspection is recommended.

Fines

In the event of a police inspection, if the first aid kit is missing or does not meet the new specifications, an administrative fine of 30 euros is imposed (according to the Traffic Code).
