New energy label for mobile phones & tablets from June 2025

New energy label for mobile phones & tablets from June 2025

From June 20, 2025, mobile phones and tablets sold in the European Union will be required to carry a new energy label. Just like refrigerators, televisions, and washing machines, portable devices will now also be evaluated.

Why is this changing?

The European Union aims to help consumers:

  • buy more efficient and sustainable devices,
  • reduce electronic waste,
  • and save money and energy.

This change is part of the EU's overall effort for a green transition and the protection of the environment.

What does the new label include?

The new energy label provides 7 key pieces of information so you know what you are buying:

1. Energy class scale (A-G)

It is calculated from the letter A to G.

2. Energy efficiency class

The closer it is to A, the more energy-efficient the device is.

3. Battery life

How many hours the device operates on a full charge in standard use.

4. Reliability from repeated free fall

The repeated free-fall reliability class (impact resistance) of a smartphone or tablet is determined based on the number of drops the device can withstand without functional problems, where A is the most durable and E the least durable.

5. Battery durability

It is calculated how many charging cycles the battery can withstand until it drops below 80% of its original capacity.

6. Repairability (Repairability Score)

It is rated how easily someone can repair the device. From A (easy) to E (difficult).

7. Resistance to drops & water (IP rating & Drop rating)

Includes an assessment of resistance to everyday wear and tear, drops, moisture, and dust.

Finally, at the top right of the label there is a QR Code which takes you to the electronic database (EPREL) with all the technical characteristics of each device, so you can see more details.

New technical requirements (Ecodesign)

The new legislation brings not only labels but also obligations for manufacturers, so that devices are more sustainable:

  • The battery must withstand at least 800 full charging cycles with over 80% initial performance.
  • Spare parts (e.g. screen, ports, microphones, cameras) must be available for 7 years after release.
  • Security and software updates must be provided for at least 5 years.
  • Repairers must have access to the necessary software and firmware without restrictions.

Which devices does it concern?

The new energy labeling applies to:

  • All smartphones (Android and iOS)
  • Tablets with screens up to 17.4 inches

Not covered:

  • Mobile phones with special specifications (e.g. military)
  • Tablets with Windows
  • Foldable models with flexible screens

What it means for you as a consumer

  • You know what you’re buying: you can compare devices not only for their features, but also for their durability and support.
  • You save money in the long run: with better batteries and easy repairs, you’ll replace your device less often.
  • You protect the environment: you help reduce electronic waste and energy consumption.
