What Should You Pay Attention to Before Buying a Robot Vacuum? Buying Guide
Do you want to buy a robot vacuum cleaner? We want to help you choose the right one!
Let's get started.
Main features
What are the key features you need to know before choosing?
1. Suction power: Pascals (Pa) measure the vacuum’s maximum suction power. Check the robot vacuum’s power and its performance on cleaning various surfaces, such as carpets, floors, and tiles. Most robot vacuums today average between 2000 and 2500 Pa. Lower values may not perform ideally for demanding cleaning.
2. Noise level: Decibels (dB) are the unit of measurement for sound intensity. The lower the decibels, the quieter the vacuum’s operation. For example, a vacuum at 69 dB or less is most likely a low-noise option. Human speech is around 60 dB.
3. Battery: Choose a robot vacuum with a runtime of 90 minutes or more, so you can be sure that with one charge it will be able to clean your space effectively. Most models today have a runtime of about 1-2 hours.
4. Vacuum height: The height of the vacuum is important so it can clean under furniture. Usually, most range from 7 to 10 centimeters.
If you want your vacuum to clean under specific furniture, such as the living room table or armchair, measure the clearance and look for a model that will fit.
5. Capacity: Dustbin capacity is an important factor and is directly related to the use you want to make of it.
Vacuums with a small dustbin capacity are ideal for small apartments of 30 - 60 sq.m, daily use, and for a daily “refresh” of the space. They are usually lighter and easier to move around!
Vacuums with medium capacity offer a balance of size and capacity. They are suitable for medium-sized homes of 60 to 90 sq.m and possibly even for a pet that does not shed much.
Vacuums with larger dustbins are ideal for large homes of 90+ sq.m or spaces with a lot of dirt and plenty of hair. The advantage is that they need less frequent emptying, but they will likely be larger in size.
6. Filters:
Check the type of filters the robot vacuum uses and how easy they are to replace. Some models have reusable filters, while others need replacement after a period of time.
Extra functions
Many robot vacuums have plenty of extra functions that can really make your life easier.
Some of these are:
- Mopping: There are robot vacuums that also mop, meaning 2 in 1!
- Automatic dustbin emptying & automatic charging: The more premium models have their own base, which most of the time serves 2 main functions: automatic emptying of the dustbin after each cleaning and automatic charging while the vacuum is on the base. Discover vacuums with these functions here!
- App control: The vacuum is compatible with Android/iOS apps, so you can control it remotely!
- Multiple mapping: It can store multiple maps from different spaces, which is very helpful if you want to use it on different floors.
- Choose cleaning zones: Allows you to select specific zones in the home where you do not want it to clean.
- Carpet cleaning: Vacuums with enough power to clean carpets effectively, since this is considered a particularly difficult surface and not all vacuums perform equally well.

You definitely always want the best possible choice. But which of these features matter most to you, based on your needs, and which capabilities & extra functions do you need?
See which of the following personas suits you best & make the right choice.
Four-legged friends?
If you have four-legged friends at home, you need a robot vacuum that can effectively handle pet hair and fur, with strong suction power, as well as the ability to detect and avoid obstacles, such as pet toys or furniture, so it doesn’t accidentally injure them. Finally, choose a vacuum with the ability to select cleaning zones, so if your four-legged friend is afraid of it, you can exclude the room where it is.
Do you have allergies?
If you have an allergy or sensitivity to dust or pollen, choose a robot vacuum with HEPA filters, which can trap even the smallest particles, such as dust mites or pollen, as well as advanced sensors that can detect and target areas with higher concentrations of allergens for thorough cleaning.
Are you on your feet all day?
If you have limited time for cleaning, you need a robot vacuum that can connect via Wi‑Fi, giving you the ability to have it clean while you’re out, and to empty the dustbin automatically! Also, you want it to do most of the work, so a robot vacuum that can both vacuum and mop is a great choice!
