The betrayal of Nintendo that gave birth to the PlayStation!
The PlayStation is currently one of the major forces in the field of video games, but many do not know how its story began and how Nintendo itself drove Sony to its limits.
The story begins in 1991, when Ken Kutaragi led the research and development department and arrived at the CES exhibition (Consumer Electronics Show) in Chicago, USA, to showcase Sony's entry into video games. Not, however, in the traditional way we might imagine based on what we have seen in recent years, but to present what the collaboration between Sony and Nintendo brought for an SNES accessory. The two companies wanted to take advantage of the benefits of CDs, so Nintendo decided to give Sony the opportunity to create a CD Drive to combine with the SNES and offer a better experience to the user.
One day before the event, however, Nintendo announced something entirely different in its interview. Its then-president, Hiroshi Yamauchi, seemed to have regretted this partnership and the rights Sony was acquiring in the video game space. Sony could earn revenue from all games sold in CD format and also enter the inner workings of Nintendo. And that was the point where he realized the danger of this collaboration.
He himself announces that the collaboration for the SNES CD drive will proceed with Philips, one of Sony's biggest competitors at the time, whose people learn at the last minute about this... betrayal. Media of the time also recorded an attempt by then-CEO of Sony, Norio Ohga, to persuade the presidents of the other two companies over the phone. Nevertheless, the deal proceeded with Philips and Sony failed to overturn the situation.
However, it was evident that Sony would not stand idly by. The SNES CD add-on project was not abandoned, and under the leadership of Ken Kutaragi, the Japanese company decided to enter the market with its own data now in hand. Thus, on December 3, 1994, the PlayStation was initially released in the Japanese market and caused a global frenzy, with the first day's stock selling out in just a few hours. The first PlayStation was released in various forms until the end of its "life" and achieved sales of 102.49 million systems. It appeared in Europe on September 29, 1995, while America had preceded on September 9 of the same year.
The rest is history..
