BLW Method: What It Is & What It Offers!
Everything about the Baby-Led Weaning method and the benefits it offers to both children and parents!
The Baby-Led Weaning method, commonly known as BLW, has become widely popular among new parents in recent years.
Although the term weaning practically means the cessation of breastfeeding, it refers to a transitional stage between breastfeeding and the introduction of solid foods, where parents offer the infant small pieces of food, such as soft fruits, boiled vegetables, and meat, or even healthy versions of foods like pancakes and muffins.
The general idea is that the child starts to familiarize themselves, come into contact with, and explore various foods in small portions on their own, at their own pace, and without pressure. The trial is done with their hands, and through this, they discover on their own what they like, guide the parents, while simultaneously learning the different textures and flavors in their original form - not mashed with a spoon, as is customary.
How to incorporate BLW into your daily routine?
After you have discussed with your pediatrician the possibility of such a feeding method, you can safely incorporate BLW into your daily routine. The pediatrician will guide you on when is the right time to start, whether the infant will receive all the necessary nutrients, and you will decide together which foods the baby can eat.
Below you will find some tips for a smoother transition:
- Apply the method when the rest of the family is at the table, so the baby feels like they are eating the same food, without restrictions. Also, when they see everyone eating, they are more ready to try and explore new foods.
- Make sure to get plates with a non-slip base, so you can be sure that your child won't throw the whole plate on the floor and waste all the food. Also, prefer plates with dividers, which allow you to place different foods. This way, it becomes clearer for the child what each food is.
- You will also need a silicone bib—preferably, so the child doesn't get dirty, and it's easier to clean. Of course, you can also get a complete feeding set, which will make things easier for you, as it includes all the essentials.

- Give your child a variety of foods, trying to include foods from different groups (vegetables, carbohydrates, proteins) at each meal. At the same time, experiment with flavors, especially in the beginning, to see what they like.
- Many parents, in order to avoid the mess and disorder that this method is likely to cause, leave the children in their high chair or seat and lay out a large sheet, towel or - even better - tablecloth, so that it is much easier to clean up afterwards.
- Do not leave the child unattended while eating. In this way, you encourage them to continue, spend these first important moments with them, while also keeping an eye on them.
- Continue breastfeeding or giving formula milk to the child with a training cup - avoiding the bottle - between meals, for complete intake of nutrients.
- If you are out, you can give the child a fresh fruit or even part of their meal.
What are the benefits of BLW?
It may seem overwhelming at first and you might feel that it will be very difficult, but just consider the benefits it will have primarily for the child both now and in the future, as well as for yourself.
But what will the child gain from all this and how will this feeding method help the parent?
