Principal Shareholder of Petros Markaris
The Double Challenge of Inspector Charitos
In the novel Major Shareholder by Petros Markaris, police officer Kostas Charitos takes on the task of solving two parallel cases. The first concerns the terrorist attack on the ship El Greco, where 300 passengers, among them his daughter Katerina, are held hostage by unknown terrorists. The pressure is enormous, as Charitos must quickly unravel the case to ensure the passengers' safety.
At the same time, in Athens, a serial killer targets advertising models and threatens to destroy the country's television system. This event adds tension and mystery to the story. Charitos is forced to be torn between the two, make difficult choices, set priorities, and confront his personal demons. Every decision he makes has serious consequences both for the cases and for his personal life.
The daughter of police inspector Kostas Charitos has successfully completed her doctoral exams in law, and she is setting off with her beloved for a vacation in Crete.
Just before the ferry, carrying 300 passengers, enters Souda, it is seized by a group of masked men who give one-word orders in English. The inspector and Adriani rush to Crete, where police and military forces, as well as competent experts from abroad, have gathered.
However, Charitos’ paternal anxiety gives way to duty, since the inspector must return to Athens to solve the most bizarre crimes. The murderer executes advertising models, threatening that he will continue killing until the mass media, especially television, stop airing commercials.
The two seemingly unrelated cases, the hijacking and the murders, after Charitos’ persistent and unconventional investigative process, are proven to have the same origin.
The Majority Shareholder is one of the most powerful novels by the internationally award-winning Petros Markaris.
The Hero's Challenges
The pressure of the cases, the anxiety for his daughter, the moral conflicts - all of these begin to erode the boundaries between Haritos' professional and personal life. The decisions he makes as a police officer have an immediate impact on his family, while his personal feelings affect his judgment in investigations.
This dangerous union of the two worlds creates an atmosphere of anxiety. The reader follows Haritos through a labyrinth where the shadows of the past intertwine with the threats of the present, and the truth seems to constantly slip away. Athens, with its bustling alleys and hidden secrets, becomes the silent witness of this struggle, providing a backdrop full of tension and twists.
Each page brings new revelations, every decision made by Haritos has unpredictable consequences. Through this adventure, the reader discovers not only the truth behind the crimes but also the human side of a police officer who struggles to maintain balance in a world that is collapsing around him.
Network of Power and Corruption
In the book Major Shareholder, it is particularly interesting that the secondary characters are not mere extras, but integral parts of the plot. Politicians, businessmen, journalists, and other prominent figures are involved in the two cases, creating a complex network of power, corruption, and personal interests. Their presence sheds light on dark aspects of society and highlights the broader context within which Inspector Haritos is called to act.
The Social Critique of the Novel
Through the narrative, Markaris transcends the limits of the simple, while simultaneously exercising social critique. Using the narrative as a vehicle, the author sensitively and astutely addresses crucial issues of contemporary Greek society. The mysterious killer, with his symbolic actions, becomes the embodiment of the moral decay that plagues society. His actions add an additional layer of meaning to the story, transforming the book into a novel that not only offers suspense and thrill but also food for thought and reflection on the society we live in.
If you thought that good detective thrillers are only written abroad, it's time to reconsider! Markaris vividly proves that Greece has its own unique place on the global map of detective fiction.
