Spearfishing Gear Buying Guide
Are you looking for a spear gun and don't know what to look for? Let's see their main characteristics and what you should pay attention to, based on the use you intend to make.
1. Speargun size
Size matters! Find the right size based on how you plan to use it.
Short (<80 cm): Suitable for murky waters & fishing among rocks.
Medium (81 - 110 cm): Suitable for visibility up to 10m & depth of 5-6m.
Long (>111 cm): Suitable for deep waters, greater freedom of movement & larger fish species.
2. Speargun type
Based on how they operate, there are 3 types of spearguns.
It is the most classic type of speargun, which uses rubber bands to fire the shaft. The bands are stretched, and when released, they generate the force needed to launch it.
#SkroutzTip During its first uses, it may be harder to load, as the bands will be tighter. Over time, however, they soften and wear out.
This type of speargun uses air pressure to launch the shaft. Pneumatic spearguns usually offer greater accuracy and are easier to maintain.
Spring-powered spearguns use a spring to launch the shaft. They are usually more affordable, smaller, and suitable for beginners or for use in shallow waters.
3. Rubber-powered speargun type
Simple
It is mainly used for fishing in shallow waters. Most of the time it has a single band that stretches from the barrel to the tip. It is usually cheaper and easier to use.
With reel
These spearguns are equipped with a mechanism that contains a cable or line wound around a spool. This cable can be used to store the shaft or to help catch larger fish. The reel allows you to adjust the depth of the tip and reduce the feeling of resistance from the fish.
4. Material
Another important feature is choosing the material of the speargun body. Most are made of aluminum or carbon. Aluminum is lightweight and durable, while carbon is even lighter, more corrosion-resistant, and has good buoyancy in water.

Are you a beginner?
Choose an easy-to-use spear gun, with a length of about 70 centimeters, suitable for fishing in rocky areas and shallow waters, as you have just started. It can be either a rubber gun, which is the most classic and has a wide variety, or a spring gun, which is easy to use!
Are you an amateur?
We would suggest choosing a medium-length spear gun, that is from 80cm to 110cm, in order to be able to aim at a depth of 5-6m. It could also be either a rubber gun or a pneumatic gun.
Are you more than an amateur?
If spearfishing is a habit in your everyday life and you want to fish... in deep waters and target larger fish species, then we would suggest choosing a long spear gun with a reel. Its material could be carbon, which makes it lightweight, resistant to corrosion, and buoyant in water.
