If you are looking for the perfect lens for your camera, let's examine together the basic characteristics and functions that you should consider in order to choose the right lens, tailored to your photographic needs.
First of all, let's answer two basic questions:
- What is the brand and model of your camera?
- What use do you want to make with your lens?
The first things you need to keep in mind are the manufacturer and the type of your camera. Why? Because lenses are not interchangeable everywhere! Make sure that the lens is compatible with the brand and model of your camera. Lenses are designed for specific systems and camera models (e.g. Sony has the E-mount series for mirrorless cameras and the A-mount series for DSLR cameras). The important thing to remember is that you can get the exact same lens from a third-party manufacturer, but with a different mount for your camera.
Additionally, a lens will have different results depending on the type of camera. For example, mounting a full-frame lens on a crop camera will produce different results. Crop lenses make the image more zoomed in, focusing more on the center of the image, while a full-frame lens has a wider coverage angle.
So, if you have a crop camera and plan to choose a lens, you need to take the crop factor into account. This means that the actual focal length of the lens needs to be multiplied by the crop factor of the camera. For example, a 50mm prime lens, which will be applied to a camera with a crop factor of 1.6, will have an actual focal length of approximately 80mm. The focal length of the lens determines how close the object appears in the frame.

Lenses with a fixed focal length (Prime)
Their focal length does not change, and they are mainly used by portrait photographers in order to effectively isolate the subject from the background, providing a dynamic result. This means they are ideal for shooting in low-light conditions and for creating impressive bokeh (blurred background).
Finally, using a prime lens also requires developing a different approach to photography. The fixed focal length means that you have to move more to adjust your frame, but this can lead to more creative shots.
Lenses with variable focal lengths (Zoom)
Zoom lenses provide flexibility and variety in your shots, as they can be adjusted to different focal lengths without the need to change lenses. This feature is especially beneficial in a wide range of shooting situations, such as landscape photography or sports events.
Lens Categories
Wide-angle lenses (Wide-angle): Lenses with a short focal length are ideal for landscape shots, architectural buildings, interiors, and vlogging. Usually, they have focal lengths under 40mm.
Ultra-wide-angle (Wide-angle): These lenses have a shorter focal length, under 24mm and cover a wider field of view. They are ideal for capturing landscapes, architectural buildings and narrow spaces.
Standard lenses (Standard): Lenses in the range of 40-60mm whose result closely resembles the human eye's vision. They are considered ideal for a variety of photography applications, such as portraits, everyday shots, and street photography.
Telephoto lenses (Telephoto): Lenses with a long focal length, over 60mm, offer high magnification and are ideal for shots that require a large zoom range, such as portraits, sports photography and nature. Telephoto zoom lenses offer a greater magnification range and focal lengths, allowing you to capture distant objects without having to get closer to the subject. They are ideal for wildlife photography, sporting events, and portraits.
Super telephoto lenses: These lenses offer an extremely large magnification range, greater than 300mm and achieve the greatest magnification of objects. They are mainly used in wildlife photography, or wherever long distances are required.

Aperture
Aperture is one of the most important elements of the lens and the camera, as it affects the quality and performance of the lens. It is used to adjust the amount of light that passes through the lens to the camera sensor, affecting the exposure and brightness of the image. Additionally, the aperture affects the depth of field, determining how focused objects will be at different distances from the lens.
It is symbolized by the letter "f" and referred to as f/stop. The aperture is inversely proportional to the actual opening of the lens. Specifically, the smaller the aperture value (or lower f/stop), the brighter the photos. This makes lenses with a low aperture ideal for shooting in low light conditions, as high ISO settings are not required, which could affect the image quality. Thus, a lens with f/2.8 represents a larger opening and provides more light, while one with f/22 corresponds to a smaller opening and offers less light.
But what is the connection between aperture and lens types?
Prime lenses, also known as fixed focal length lenses, have a fixed minimum aperture, as they do not have zoom capability. The minimum aperture remains constant regardless of their focal length.
On the other hand, zoom lenses can have a variable minimum aperture. As you zoom in, the lens receives less light and the power of the f increases. It is an ultra-wide-angle lens with a 180-degree curved design, that creates a distinctive distortion effect in the image. It produces images with a very wide field of view, presenting objects with a distinctive rounded shape, resembling the eye of a fish, from which its name comes.
It usually has a focal length of 8 or 10 mm. They are widely used in special photography and video applications, as well as for creative techniques and effects. They can add a unique aesthetic to images and create impressive panoramic compositions.
Tilt-Shift Lenses
A tilt lens is a specialized type of lens that allows the tilt of the lens upwards or downwards, without changing the horizontal or vertical position of the camera. This capability allows the photographer to control the focus field and depth of field and can fit many elements within the frame with minimal distortion.
Tilt lenses are typically used in architectural photography and indoor spaces where there is limited distance from the subject. Tilt lenses require familiarity and practice to be used effectively, but offer great creative potential and control to the photographer.

What do I want to photograph and where?
Landscapes:
Prefer wide-angle lenses with a shorter focal length, which will allow you to cover a larger area in the frame. By choosing a wide-angle lens with a low aperture value (such as f/2.8), you will have a wider depth of field, allowing the objects in the background and foreground of the frame to be equally focused and clear.
Portraits:
For portrait photography, a prime lens with a large aperture (such as f/1.8 or f/1.4) and focal length close to 50mm or even greater is an excellent choice for portraits, offering high image quality and beautiful blurred backgrounds that will enhance the subject of your portrait.
Travel / Street Photography:
It is recommended to use a lens with a wide focal length range (e.g. 24-70mm, 18-135mm, 18-300mm). These lenses offer a flexible focal distance that covers both wide angles for landscapes and architectural shots, as well as a longer focal distance for portraits. Such a lens allows you to easily and comfortably capture various scenes and moments during your travels without the need to constantly change lenses. Additionally, size and weight are crucial factors in choosing such a lens.
Wildlife and Sports:
For this type of photography, it is important to choose lenses that offer long focal length, fast autofocus, and built-in image stabilization to avoid blurry images due to vibrations during shooting.
Zoom lenses with a wide range of focal lengths are ideal for such situations, as they allow you to quickly adjust your frame to different scenes without constantly changing lenses. You can choose a telephoto lens 70-200mm for long distance shooting or even a wider range lens, like a 100-400mm, to get closer to your subjects from a distance and capture details.
Daily Use / Beginner:
As a beginner, a good choice for daily use is a zoom lens with a medium focal length range. This type of lens offers flexibility and allows you to capture various types of scenes without the need to buy multiple lenses. A kit lens 18-55mm, which is usually included with cameras, is a very good choice as it covers a wide range of focal lengths and is suitable for everyday situations.

Auto Focus:
The auto focus function (automatic focusing) in lenses is a technology that allows the lens to focus automatically on the subject of the photo, without the need for manual adjustment by the photographer. It is especially useful for photographing moving subjects or events.
Image stabilizer:
Image Stabilization or Vibration Reduction in lenses is a technology that helps reduce blurry photos caused by camera shake during shooting. The function of the image stabilizer is to detect camera movements and compensate for them with an internal process, thus allowing the capture of more stable and clearer photos. It is especially useful in low-light conditions, long focal lengths, or slow shutter speeds, as well as when shooting video or handheld photos.
Cleaning and maintenance
- Before attaching the lens to the camera, make sure that the outer side of the rear part of the lens is clean and free of dust.
- Use a blower to remove dust and any particles that could cause scratches on the glass.
- Use a dry microfiber cloth and a brush to ensure that you clean the area without causing any damage.
