Radio Buying Guide

This guide will help you distinguish which radio is suitable for your own needs and preferences. We will see the differences between portable and pocket radios, as well as transmission systems and connectivity.

Types of Radio

  • Portable / HandheldThe handheld radio is a portable radio receiver that can be held in the hand. It is usually small in size, portable and lightweight, and allows you to listen to radio stations on the go. It is ideal for use during travel, outings, or anywhere else where you want to listen to the radio without needing a large, fixed system.
  • TabletopThe tabletop radio is a type of radio designed for use on a table or work surface. Tabletop radios usually feature larger speakers that offer good sound quality. The tabletop radio is ideal for use at home, the office, or other indoor spaces where you want to enjoy music or the news.
  • Pocket: The pocket radio is another type of portable radio designed to fit easily in the user's pocket. It is small in size and lightweight, making it ideal for portable radio listening wherever you are. It is ideal for travel, hiking, the gym, or any other situation where you want access to music or information with a portable device.

Radio Features

  • Internet Radio: These radios use modern audio codecs such as wma, aac/aac+ and the sound quality is even better than DAB, DAB+ digital radios.
  • Dab: DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) is a digital audio transmission technology for radio signals. It provides an analog alternative to traditional analog FM broadcasting.
  • DAB offers better sound quality, less noise, as well as more stations and content within the same bandwidth. DAB receivers receive the digital signal through an antenna and decode the signal to convert it into sound.
  • Dab+: DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting Plus) is an improved digital audio transmission technology for radio signals. It is the evolution of the previous DAB system and offers better sound quality, greater efficiency, and broad coverage. The main differences between DAB and DAB+ are the use of the more efficient MPEG-4 HE-AACv2 audio codec, which provides better sound quality at lower data rates.  This means that DAB+ can offer more stations and content within a given bandwidth. In addition, DAB+ is compatible with Hybrid Radio, which combines DAB+ broadcasting with the internet, offering additional features such as music streaming and personalized content.
  • Docking StationA docking station is a device that allows another device to be connected and charged, such as a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or mp3 player.
