CHristodoulos K. CHristodoulou

Christodoulos K. Christodoulou was born in Avgorou, Famagusta District, in April 1939. He holds a Ph.D. in Labor Law from the University of Wales. He is also a graduate in Legal Studies from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Political Sciences from Panteion University of Athens, and Education from the Pedagogical Academy of Cyprus. He is a registered lawyer. He worked in various positions in the public service and was promoted to the position of Director-General at the Ministry of Labor and Social Insurance in March 1985. From June 1989 to November 1994, he served as Director-General at the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Environment. In November 1994, he was appointed Minister of Finance, and in March 1999, Minister of the Interior. In May 2002, he was appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, a position he held until May 2, 2007. Since May 2007, he has been a Business Consultant. As Minister of Finance, he represented Cyprus at the Annual Conferences of the International Bank, where he served as Governor for Cyprus, and the International Monetary Fund, as well as at the Annual Meetings of Commonwealth Finance Ministers. He also participated in numerous international economic conferences and meetings. He significantly contributed to the development and stability of Cyprus's economy and the promotion of Cyprus's accession to the European Union. As Minister of the Interior, Christodoulos K. Christodoulou reorganized Civil Defense, promoted the construction of shelters, coordinated all fire-fighting services under the Ministry of the Interior, expedited and decentralized the processes for issuing passports, identity cards, urban planning permits, and property titles, and introduced a housing scheme for small communities. As Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus, he played a crucial role in shaping and implementing the strategic plan for joining the eurozone, a significant part of which was promoted and implemented through the Joint Coordinating Committee of the Central Bank and the Ministry of Finance, which he chaired from its inception. Among the various other positions he held, he served as Chairman of the Boards of numerous state organizations, such as the Human Resource Development Authority, the Higher Technical Institute, the Productivity Center, the Institute of Hotel and Catering Arts, the Agricultural Insurance Organization, the Environment Committee, and others. He was a member of the Boards of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Council (WFC), and the General Council of the European Central Bank. He also represented Cyprus at numerous international conferences, meetings, and seminars. Christodoulos K. Christodoulou has made significant contributions to trade unionism and has been actively involved in national, social, and cultural activities. Among other roles, he was a member of the Liberation Struggle of 1955-59 and was a Political Prisoner. He also served as General Secretary of the Union of Fighters of Nicosia, the Pan-Cyprian United Front of Fighters, and the Pan-Cyprian National Youth Organization. He has written books and numerous articles and studies, and has given lectures on topics related to trade unions, economics, and law, as well as subjects of general interest. He is married and has a daughter and a granddaughter.
