Maria Gavala

Maria Gavalas was born in Koropi, Attica, in 1947. She studied History and Archaeology at the University of Athens. As a member of the editorial board of the magazine "Contemporary Cinema" (1980-84), she published numerous articles on cinema. Her writings on cinema have also been published in various magazines and newspapers. She has written scripts, directed short films, and produced documentaries for television. She directed the feature films: "About Love" (1981) - awarded at the "Women's Film Festival" in Florence in 1983, "Scent of Violets" (1985), and "The Magic Glass" (1989) - which received the State Film Award in the same year. As a seasoned novelist since 1994, she has authored seven novels ("The Angels' Maid," 1994, "The Lady of the House," 1996, "Seaside Resort in Winter," 1999, "In the Coolness of My Gardens," 2001, "Extreme Weather Conditions," 2003, "The Girls of the Square," 2006, "The Lemon Orchard," 2012) and a collection of short stories ("Made of Glass," 2011). She has also published short stories in magazines and newspapers. Additionally, she has translated theoretical texts on cinema and contemporary novels, always from the French language.
