Athanasios E. Karathanasis

Athanasios Karathanasis was born in 1946 in Volos. He holds a degree from the School of Philosophy (1969) and pursued postgraduate studies at the Institute of Byzantine and Post-Byzantine Studies in Venice (1969-1972), at the Sorbonne (Paris IV), and at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (1979-1981). In 1985, he graduated from the School of Theology at Aristotle University and earned his doctorate from the same schools in 1975 and 1987, respectively. He is a scholar of the Academy of Athens and has participated in scientific conferences both in Greece and abroad. From 1969 to 1972, he served as a scientific associate-researcher at the Hellenic Institute of Venice, and from 1974 to 1987, he was a researcher at I.M.X.A. In 1984, he was elected as a lecturer at the School of Philosophy at the University of Athens. In 1988, he was appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of Philology at the University of Athens, and since 1989, he has been an associate professor of the History of Greek Culture at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In 1992, he was elected as a professor at the same university in the field of Greek History. He teaches at Democritus University of Thrace (Departments of Greek Philology and History - Ethnology), as well as at the University of Thessaly (Departments of Education). In 1999, he was elected President of the Department of Pastoral and Social Theology at the School of Theology of A.U.Th. He is married to Eleni-Aimilia Papaemmanouil and has two daughters.
