Norman B. Epstein

Norman B. Epstein is a professor in the Department of Family Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. He earned his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1974. His teaching, research, and scholarly publications have focused on understanding and treating couple dysfunctions and family relationships, as well as the awareness of individual psychopathology in relation to relationship functionality. He has developed and evaluated cognitive-behavioral diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for couples in crisis. Additionally, he has conducted research studies on depression and anxiety within the family environment, parent-child communication patterns, family stress and its management, and cognitive factors in marital and family dysfunction. Throughout his career, he has worked concurrently as a clinician with individuals, couples, and families. He is a clinical member and certified supervisor of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, with 26 years of experience in training and supervising couple and family therapists. He is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, a diplomate of the American Board of Assessment Psychology, and a founding fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. Since the early 1980s, he has maintained a highly productive collaboration and strong friendship with Donald H. Baucom, with whom he has worked to advance the theory, research, and clinical practice of couple relationships.
