Stayros Tsiolis

Stavros Tsiolis (1937-2019) was born in Tripoli. He studied film at the Stavrakos Film School. In 1958, he began working as an assistant director at Finos Film studios, and after a decade and approximately 54 films, he started writing and directing films for the company himself. Following his first feature-length film, "The Young Runaway" (1968), he achieved a series of commercial successes, including "Abuse of Power" (1971, one of the most successful films in the history of Greek cinema). He took a break from filmmaking and returned in 1985 as a director of independent Greek cinema with "Such a Long Absence," which won five awards at the Thessaloniki Film Festival and received a special mention from the International Federation of Film Critics. His subsequent films were screened at festivals in Greece and abroad, earning significant accolades. He passed away in Athens on Tuesday, July 23, 2019, at the age of 82.
