Giorgos Kaftantzis was born on March 22, 1920, in Irakleia, Serres. He graduated from the Law School of the University of Thessaloniki in 1949 and practiced law in the city of Serres, where he lived from 1952 to 1985. He participated in the Battle of Crete, which is referenced in his novel "Twelve Days," and in the National Resistance as a leading member of EPON (Maleas). He played a key role in the publication of the magazines "Start" of the University of Thessaloniki, "Orpheus" of Serres, among others.
He was one of the prominent figures among Northern Greek writers outside Thessaloniki. He remained steadfastly in his beloved city of Serres; in his honor, the municipality named a central square after him. He was a regular member of the Society of Greek Writers of Thessaloniki. His interests spanned the broad spectrum of intellectual life in his region, as well as social and cultural life, with corresponding activities. His persistent and painstaking engagement with history and the treasures of its constituent elements reflects his unwavering concern for the region and its people, something that is also depicted in his literature. He passed away on March 12, 1998.
