
Maria I. Kazamia - Tsernou
Maria I. Kazamia-Tsernou was born in Athens in 1959. She studied at the School of Philosophy (Department of Archaeology and Art) and the School of Theology at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH). She pursued postgraduate studies at the Sorbonne University (Paris IV) in the field of Byzantine Art, where she received her D.E.A. in 1987. In 1992, she was awarded a doctorate from the Department of Theology at AUTH. She teaches the mandatory course in Byzantine Archaeology at the Department of Theology at AUTH, where she has served since 1981, initially as a scientific associate and currently as an associate professor. She has participated in national and international conferences in her field and has authored articles and monographs. Her work primarily focuses on Christian iconography and the interpretation of Byzantine art. She is a regular member of the Christian Archaeological Society, the Hellenic Society for Biblical Studies, the Society for Macedonian Studies, the European Society of Women in Theological Research, among others.
Her major studies include: "The Healing of the Paralytic in Early Christian and Byzantine Iconography," Thessaloniki 1994 (doctoral dissertation) and "Depicting the Supplication in Byzantine Churches of Greece," Thessaloniki 2003.
