Maria Papathanasiou

Maria Papathanasiou is a historian, a graduate of the Department of History and Archaeology at the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens. She holds a master's degree in International History from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and a doctorate from the University of Vienna (Institute of Social and Economic History). Her research interests and publications (both in Greece and internationally) focus on the European—primarily Central European—region during the 19th and early 20th centuries, with an emphasis on the history of childhood, family, rural societies, working classes, artisans, and labor. Her written works include the following books: 1. "Zwischen Arbeit, Spiel und Schule. Die ökonomische Funktion der Kinder ärmerer Schichten in Österreich 1880-1939" [Between Work, School, and Play: The Economic Role of Children from Poorer Strata in Austria 1880-1939] (Social and Economic Historical Studies, 24), Verlag für Geschichte und Politik Wien / R. Oldenbourg Verlag München, Vienna/Munich 1999. 2. "Colonies and Competitions: 15th-20th Century" (Special Topics in European Culture, III), Hellenic Open University, Patras 2001. 3. "Growing Up in the Mountainous Region: Children and Childhood in Krokyleio Dorida in the Early Decades of the 20th Century" (Historical Archive of Greek Youth, 38), Athens 2003. She has taught European history at the Universities of Patras, the Aegean, Thrace, and Athens. Since 2002, she has been working as a tutor at the Hellenic Open University (in the thematic unit "Social and Economic History of Europe"). In October 2010, she was elected Assistant Professor of Modern European History at the Department of History and Archaeology of the School of Philosophy of the University of Athens.
